Building Research |
Getting Ready
First thing you need to do if you want to market is research Diplomacy then Trade, This will allow you to build a Market, before you can market you need to also build Cargo Warehouses (each cargo warehouse holds 10k resources, which take 30 minutes to clear. This means if you build the maximum number of warehouses you’ll be able to make a total of trades involving 40 million resources).
However to start with build a few warehouses, 3-5 will do, as you can build them while you’re playing when you have a bit of resources left over.
Mercantile Ranking
The way the market works is you have ranks of trading (just like ranks of mining and learning, etc.) and the higher your rank the better you trade, that is the higher your rank is the less it costs you to trade. Because you start with rank 1 trading at 50% efficiency, which means that you’ll be paying 50% more then the shown price and receiving 50% less. The cost becomes less and less the higher your rank until you’re rank 20 and it shows “you are a master of mercantile” then you’re trading for “free” this means you’re buying and selling at the shown price.
So when you have your market you’ll want to get to rank 20 as soon as you can, so you can start making resources. To get to rank 20 you’ll need to trade at the market, and yes this will cost you resources while you’re doing it, but you’ll make it back really soon!
To increase your rank, wait for food to show a price of 0.30-0.35 and trade at the minimum rank increase (the number increase at each rank). If you look at the picture you’ll see I have gotten to Mercantile Rank 1, (this takes one trade of 1 resourse) and now my minimum trade increase is 5000 (marked in red). To trade at minimum trade increase click the underlined 5,000 and it will automatically put 5,000 in both the sell and buy box. This will save you typing in the number constantly. Then simply buy and sell 5000 food back and forth, keeping a close eye on your cargo space (if you run out you’ll be “stuck” with 5,000 food, and this will be eaten by the hungry population, so you’ll loose the resources). until you see the number of minimum trade increase go to 10,000, this will mean you’ve gotten to rank 2.
Then you trade 10k back and forth until you get to rank 3, doing the same for each rank until you’re trading 95k back and forth to get to rank 20. you’ll want to build some cargo warehouses while you’re going up in ranks because otherwise your waiting forever to do one or two trades.
Beat the Market!
When you get to rank 20 the main idea is to buy low and sell high,
- Food goes from 0.30 to 0.60
- Wood goes from 0.80 to 1.50
- Iron goes from 0.80 to 1.50
- Oil goes from 4.80 to 6.40
The quickest way to market is to buy and sell food, however you need a lot of cargo space for this and food gets eaten while you’re holding it (depending on how large your population is). So it’s a good way to kick start your market at the start or when you’ve been killed.
I personally prefer to market with wood and iron when I have some resources. I’ll buy wood and iron when they’re low (so .80 to .90) and sell when they’re high, if I have sold iron or wood and there isn’t one that’s low I’ll buy oil, since it’s the most steady (it doesn’t fluctuate as much) which makes it less interesting to market with but better to hold on to your resources when everything’s dropping.
And then when wood or iron has gone low again I’ll sell the oil to buy the low resource. Another way is to sell whichever of iron or wood is higher and buy the lower. So say iron is 1.15 and wood is 1.02 you would sell iron and buy wood. This way you increase the number of resources you have thus increasing your wealth.
Personally I use all these three ways in combination depending on how much resources I have and how much cargo space I have.
